Why Jump Ship's Beers Are Gluten Free
Share
We’re passionate about crafting award-winning alcohol-free beers that are accessible to anyone. Born from a frustration with the lack of quality non alcoholic beer options, we’ve dedicated ourselves to brewing beers that everyone can enjoy, whether you’re avoiding gluten, alcohol, or both. In this blog, we're exploring why our beers are gluten-free, how gluten naturally appears in beer, the techniques we use to remove it, and how we ensure our brews meet the highest standards.
Where Gluten Comes From in Beer
Gluten is a protein found in grains like barley, wheat, and rye, which are traditionally used in beer brewing. When these grains are malted and mashed, gluten proteins enter the beer, making most conventional beers unsuitable for those with gluten intolerance or coeliac disease. As we utilise the same processes and ingredients in producing non-alcoholic beers, gluten can be a hidden concern for consumers seeking gluten-free and non alcoholic beer options.
How Gluten Is Removed
At Jump Ship, all of our beers are gluten-free as standard. While the raw ingredients going into our mash tun contain gluten, we utilise several processes to reduce gluten levels to an almost undetectable <10 parts per million (ppm). This is lower than the requirement of <20 ppm to be labelled gluten-free; however, we aim for each batch to reach undetectable levels. We utilise a specific enzyme that breaks down the gluten protein, along with others, into different smaller fragments that no longer have any effect. We've developed this technique to coincide with our controlled fermentation, a tricky balance but one we've honed over the years. This approach allows us to create non alcoholic beers that retain rich, complex flavours without compromising on gluten levels.
How We Check to Ensure There's No Gluten
Quality and safety are key at Jump Ship. Every single batch undergoes rigorous third-party testing to confirm gluten levels are below the threshold required for gluten-free labelling, and as we mentioned previously, often way below this target. This ensures that our beers are safe for those with gluten sensitivities and coeliac disease. Nothing leaves the site until this check has been completed, so you can rest assured that the product you receive is always gluten-free.
We're proud to be able to provide the level of reassurance that every single batch of beer we produce has been stringently tested to ensure you are getting the product you expect. We're always exploring the world of gluten-free beer production and are excited by the novel developments in gluten-free versions of standard grains, the use of non-gluten-containing grains and new processes to remove gluten. Watch this space as we'll certainly be keeping you up to date on all the developments me make in this blog.
