How alcohol-free beer supports a healthy lifestyle — calories, sugar & more
At Jump Ship, our mission is clear: to create world-class alcohol-free beers that bring you all the joy of a properly crafted brew – minus the alcohol. As Scotland’s dedicated alcohol-free brewery, we believe you shouldn’t have to compromise on taste for healthier choices, so our beers aren't just non-alcoholic but also low in sugar and calories..
The healthier brew: why go alcohol-free?
Choosing alcohol-free beer isn’t just about avoiding alcohol – it’s about embracing better wellbeing. This means you enjoy the ritual and refreshment of a beer without many of the unwanted effects. It’s perfect for those focused on fitness, wanting to lose weight or just keen to make a healthier choice. We know there are many reasons for jumping ship from alcohol, and we want to make sure that no matter why you do it, you don't have to miss out on great beer!
Calories in alcohol-free beer vs alcoholic
Much of beer’s calorie content comes from alcohol itself. Simply by not having all that alcohol in each drink, we're cutting out a lot of the calories right from the start!
For example, a standard pint of regular beer can deliver over 200 calories.1 Our beers typically contain around 125 calories per pint – that's 38% less compared to an equivalent alcoholic counterpart.
How about sugar in alcohol free beer?
Well, we've got you covered there, too. Regular beer tends to score quite well for sugar content, as the sugar is turned into alcohol in the brewing process. However, the sugar content can creep up in some alcohol-free beers as producers may use it to add body to their brews. In contrast, by using an innovative combination of techniques in the brewing process, we ensure that our beers have plenty of body without needing added sugar.
Beer Type | Calories (per 100ml) | Sugar (g per 100ml) |
---|---|---|
Regular beer (5%) | 35 | 0.5 |
Steamboat Alcohol-Free Hazy Pale (<0.5%) | 22 | 0.7 |
BRULO Lust For Life DDH IPA (<0.5%) | 33 | 3.8 |
Days Pale Ale (0%) | 21 | 2.3 |
Beavertown Lazer Crush (0.3%) | 27 | 3.0 |
Just imagine the difference over a night out—enjoying three pints of Steamboat instead of full-strength beer could save you over 200 calories or over 50g of sugar compared to some other alcohol free beers! Not to mention, when you start to compare it to the equivalent volume of cola, which would contain 180g of sugar and over 800 calories!
What are the wider health benefits?
A low sugar diet helps support balanced blood sugar levels and reduces the risk of conditions like diabetes and obesity, while consuming fewer calories can assist in weight management and promote heart health. Alcohol-free beers also let you enjoy social occasions without the negative effects of alcohol, such as dehydration (and that sore head in the morning). Compared to alcoholic beers, non-alcoholic beers are also far kinder on the liver, even shown to improve the quality of life for people suffering from liver cirrhosis.2
